The president (PT) defended on Monday (22) the implementation of the solution of two states- e – As a path to the pacification of the Middle East. The statement was made in New York, during the International High Level Conference for the Peaceful Resolution of the Palestinian issue, convened by France and Saudi Arabia, on the eve of the 80th General Assembly of .
“What is happening in Gaza is not only the extermination of the Palestinian people, but an attempt to annihilage their nation dream. Both Israel and Palestine have the right to exist,” said Lula. The Brazilian president pointed out that peace in the region involves recognition of an independent Palestinian state, within the borders of 1967, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem as capital.
Lula recalled that the solution of two states was approved 78 years ago by the UN General Assembly, but that only Israel materialized. He also criticized UN Security Council paralysis in the face of conflict. “The conflict between Israel and Palestine shows how the tyranny of the veto sabota the very reason for being the UN,” he said. In his speech, Lula reiterated Brazil’s conviction to Hamas’s attacks, but stressed that Israel’s right of defense cannot justify the civilian massacre.
“Nothing justifies lifelong or mutilating more than 50,000 children, destroying 90% of Palestinian homes and using hunger as a weapon of war, nor hungry people in search of help,” he said. The president also defended the creation of an organ -inspired body against apartheid, which played a central role in the end of racial segregation in South Africa. For Lula, to ensure the self -determination of Palestine is “an act of justice” and essential to restore the credibility of multilateralism.
