Can cheese cause nightmares? Find out the truth

Cheese is a favorite snack for many, but for a long time there has been a myth that it can cause nightmares. Recent studies show that this myth may have a certain basis, especially for people with sensitivity to certain foods. Finding out how cheese affects sleep can help you ensure a calmer and better quality rest.

Cheese and nightmares: what does science say

Myths about nightmares have existed for centuries after eating cheese, but only recently researchers from the Université de Montréal have found a connection between food intolerance and nightmares. Almost 1,100 people participated in the study. It turned out that people with lactose intolerance were more likely to have digestive disorders that could interfere with sleep and stimulate nightmares.

  • About one third of the participants were regularly suffered from nightmares.
  • Women often remembered their dreams and reported poor sleep.
  • About 40% of the participants believed that eating late at night or certain foods affects their sleep.

Why cheese can disturb sleep

Cheese is a rich and fat source, making it digesting longer. Eating at bedtime can activate the digestive system, making sleep more troubled. In addition, ripened cheeses contain amino acid thyramin, which can affect the release of cerebral hormones and make dreams more pronounced.

“Nightmares are more likely to occur in people who have indigestion and have poor quality sleep,” says Dr. Tore Nielsen. This explains why many people blame cheese for unpleasant dreams.

How to reduce the risk of nightmares by eating cheese

To avoid nightmares, it is recommended:

  • Do not eat cheese 2-3 hours before bed.
  • Combine cheese with easy -to -digest foods such as nuts, fruits or healthy breads.
  • Eat smaller portions to make the digestion less overloaded.
  • Practicing good sleep hygiene – to sleep in a cool, dark and quiet environment, to follow a steady sleep schedule.

Other foods that may disturb sleep

Without cheese, some foods can disrupt sleep and promote unpleasant dreams:

  • Sweet and fatty food
  • Spicy dishes
  • Too much carbohydrate or fat
  • Coffee and alcohol

These products can interfere with sleep cycles, making dreams brighter and more memorable.
