A study from the University of Michigan brought conclusions that may surprise even the most attentive to food. Certain daily products, many of them considered banal, have a direct impact on life expectancy. Investigators calculated in the minute the time that can be lost with some eating habits.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, among the most media examples is the hot dog, an icon of fast food food that, according to the data, can remove up to 36 minutes per unit consumed. Other foods, such as cheese hamburgers, also appear on the black list, with less 9 minutes awarded to each ingestion.
Processed meats do not escape criticism. The study indicates that ham or cooked ham remove about 24 minutes of life per dose. And of course, quick dishes such as pizza or noodles with cheese appear equally associated with significant losses in longevity.
The role of artificial drinks
The conclusions did not stay for solid food. Non -sugar drinks, where sweet taste is obtained through aspartame, were pointed as potentially harmful. In this case, each consumption can mean 12 minutes of life, according to the investigators.
Aspartame is an artificial sweetener created in 1965, known for being almost 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is used in small quantities to flavor soft drinks and other products. Despite its popularity, it raises increasing health concerns.
Robert WB Love, a neuroscientist cited in the study, recalls that this compound “is not good for intestinal bacteria and is associated with many negative side effects, including animal cancer cases.” Additional studies have also pointed out a connection with increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
Anxiety and other unexpected effects
In addition to the physical impact, researchers also observed an association between artificially sweetened drinks and the increase of anxiety episodes. Which for many was seen as a healthier alternative to sugar, after all it may have other unwanted consequences.
The list of concerns does not end here. Ultra -processed products tend to interfere with the natural mechanisms of satiety, leading to excessive calorie consumption. This change in the balance between ingestion and energy expenditure has been pointed out as one of the main causes of obesity growth.
Over the past 40 years, cases of overweight have multiplied globally. For experts, ultra -processed, loaded with simple sugars, salt and additives, are at the center of this reality.
Not everything is bad news
The same study highlights, however, that there are foods capable of prolonging life. Some types of fish, for example, can add up to 10 minutes to life hope per portion.
Another relevant data is the contribution of fruits and vegetables. Replacing only 10% of daily calories from meat processed by vegetables and fresh fruit can translate into another 48 minutes of life.
These findings stress that minor changes in food may have a real impact on health and longevity. More fish, more vegetables and less processed seem to be the key to balance the balance.
The study also suggests that conscious daily choices, made gradually, can accumulate benefits over the years. A healthy meal at a time can become significant life gains.
Although the calculation in minutes arouses curiosity, according to, the main message is clear: food options shape not only quality but also the duration of life.
