Some electronic devices are in the sights of the Portuguese authorities for the impact they may have on road surveillance. Your simple presence inside the car, even turned off or hidden, can result in immediate apprehension, heavy fines and sanctions considered serious.
What is prohibited
The equipment concerned is radar detectors, also called anti -anti -arrested devices. The same source reinforces that, even if the device has been legally acquired in another country of the European Union, its possession in Portuguese territory remains illegal.
The purpose of the prohibition is to ensure that all drivers respect speed limits without resorting to devices that compromise the effectiveness of inspection.
Distinction between detectors and GPS
Unlike detectors, GPS systems that mark the location of fixed radars are allowed, provided they do not issue signals or interfere with speed control devices.
Some hybrid devices, with advanced features, may go unnoticed, so it is recommended to disable functions that detect real -time radars.
LEGAL FRAMEWORK AND PREVIOUS SANCTIONSs
The road code, through article 109, expressly prohibits the use or possession of equipment designed to alert the driver about the presence of police control.
Law No. 102/99 of 5 August classifies this infraction as serious, establishing in article 171 the applicable fines, while Article 180 provides for the immediate seizure of the provision.
In case of recurrence or aggravating articles, Article 181 also allows the application of the temporary inhibition sanction to conduct.
Intensified inspection
In recent years, inspection has been intensified, especially through joint PSP and GNR operations in critical speeding zones.
According to data from ANSR, the number of seizures has increased, especially in high range vehicles, reflecting reinforced surveillance about this infraction.
Impact on Automobile Insurance
The presence of these devices may also have consequences with the insurers. In case of accident, serious infractions may aggravate prizes or lead to coverage refusal.
Significant increase in the seizures of radar detectors
In 2024, it registered a significant increase in the number of seizures of radar detectors, especially in high range vehicles.
This phenomenon led security forces to increase surveillance over this type of infraction. The same source warns that possession of this type of technology is not only illegal, but considerably increases the severity of the infraction and the risk of additional sanctions.
