A 5.4 richter 5.4 earthquake has reached western regions on Wednesday (24), but there are no records of dead or injured so far, the Venezuelan Foundation for seismological research (Funvisis) has reported. The organization published in its social network account that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 40 kilometers northeast of La Ceiba, a city in the state of Trujillo, and 40 kilometers southeast of Bachaquero, in the state of Zulia. The depth was 26.5 kilometers, add the report, which details that the tremor took place at 6:21 pm (7:21 pm in Brasilia).

In the statement, Funvisis asks citizens to help calculate the dimension of the earthquake through a questionnaire published on the social network. The Minister of Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello, said that there was no “great structural damage” after the earthquake. “This has a lot to do with the quality of construction in Venezuela, among other things, (the government program) Gran Misión Vivienda Venezuela,” he said in his weekly program “Con El Mazo de”, broadcast by state station Venezuelan television (VTV).

In the first reports of Civil Defense in different locations in Zulia, a state on the Colombian border, no injuries or serious damage to the infrastructure were recorded. In a park in the municipality of Jesús Enrique Lossada, in this region in the west of the country, “the electric wires broke,” said the Civil Defense, who added that the workers of the state -owned Electric Electricity Company were already in place. In addition to Zulia, X users reported having felt the tremor in cities in the states of Táchira, Lara, Merida, Barinas, Trujillo, as well as in Caracas.

The tremor was also felt in some parts of Colombia, especially in cities of the Caribbean coast, such as Barranquilla and Cartagena, and in Medellin, in the northwest of the country.

The earthquake was magnitude 6.1 according to the Geological Service of Colombia, while the (USGS) geological service reported a magnitude 6.2 at a shallow depth with an epicenter in Mene Grande, Zulia. About 12 minutes later, a secondary tremor of magnitude 4.3 was recorded.
