Barroso says goodbye to the presidency of the Supreme Court in session with honors and management balance

About to leave command of the Supreme Court (STF), Minister Luís Roberto Barroso participates on Thursday in his last plenary session as president of the Court. Barroso leaves the presidency of the Supreme next Monday, when Minister Edson Fachin takes office for a two-year term.

At the farewell session, Barroso should read a balance of his management and also receive honors from his colleagues. Traditionally, it is up to the Supreme Dean to end the mandate of the president who is leaving. Currently, the function is performed by Minister Gilmar Mendes.

Prior to the farewell session, Barroso gathered the Supreme Ministers at a dinner held at his house in Brasilia. All ministers were invited, in addition to the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, and Union Attorney General Jorge Messias.

A native of Vassouras, in Rio de Janeiro, Barroso turned 12 in the STF in June this year, after taking the place of Minister Ayres Britto. Graduated in Law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), where he is a full professor of Constitutional Law, Barroso has a master’s degree at the University of Yale (USA), a doctorate at UERJ and postdoctoral degree at Harvard University (USA).

A member of the Supreme since 2013, Minister Luiz Edson Fachin took over the vacancy left by the retirement of Minister Joaquim Barbosa. Lawyer and academic, he was a full professor of Civil Law at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), where he graduated in law in 1980. He has a master’s degree and a doctorate in Civil Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) and postdoctoral in Canada.
