The mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD-RJ), formalized support to the CBF, who wishes to host the Club World Cup in 2029. The document was delivered by the municipal secretary of sport, Guilherme Schleder to Samir Xud, president of CBF, and Paes made the Rio de Janeiro capital “available to be one of the headquarters”.

– In this year’s World Cup, held in the United States, three of the four Brazilian participants were from Rio. The event was a huge success in the city. Nothing more natural than supporting Brazil’s candidacy to receive the next edition in 2029 – said the mayor.

This year, the Club World Cup debuted the format with 32 teams participating in all football confederations around the globe. The World Cup format expanded the tournament to a dispute that lasted about a month and mobilized 11 US cities to host the event. According to Schleder, hosting the tournament can “reaffirm Rio de Janeiro as a sports destination”: the city will be the house of the 2027 women’s World Cup final, and competes alongside Niterói to the 2030 Pan American Games.

– These are initiatives that produce positive impacts on the economy, tourism and have social bias, inspiring children and youth. I formalized this support in meeting with CBF’s, and we will work to make the Brazilian candidacy the winner – explained Guilherme Schleder.
