The president made on Wednesday (24) a call for developed countries to engage in the commitment to present new nationally determined contributions (NDCs), with updated goals of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as established.

During the special climate event for heads of state and government, in the United Nations, Lula recalled that the new NDCs will be determinant for the debates that will be looked at.

“Energy transition opens the doors to a productive and technological transformation equipped with the Industrial Revolution. NDCs are the map of the path that will guide each country in this change. They are not mere numbers or percentage, they are an opportunity to rethink and reorient policy and investments towards a new economic paradigm. For this to occur on a global scale, rich nations need to anticipate their climatic neutrality goals and expand the climatic neutrality and expand the climatic neutrality and expand the climatic neutrality and broaden Access to resources and technologies to developing countries, ”he said.

“We want to promote a summit of leaders who provide a frank and straightforward dialogue that our societies have entrusted to us. We have a chance to repair injustices and build a prosperous and sustainable future for all. So I appeal to countries that have not yet presented their NDCs: the success of COP 30 depends on you,” Lula concluded.

Negationism

Lula co-presidued, alongside the secretary general of, the event, with authorities from different countries. According to the president, COP30, which will take place in November, will be the COP “of Truth”, as it will show the degree of commitment of countries in facing climate change.

“Let us make the stage together in a decisive moment in the history of multi-field. I have told the Secretary General that COP30 is the COP of Truth. She will have to tell whether or not we believe in what science is showing us. Whether we, leaders and heads of state, trust science or not,” he said.

“When hosting the COP, in the Amazon, Brazil wants to show that there is no way to preserve nature without taking care of people. There is no way to revolutionize our relationship with the planet without engaging a wide range of actors,” he added.

The Brazilian president criticized climate negationism and added that there is also multilateral negationism that threatens global commitments. “The negationism we face is not only climate, but also multilateral. No one is safe from the effects of climate change. Walls on borders will not contain dried and storms. Nature does not bow to bombs or war ships. No country is above unilateralism is the chain reaction it causes. Every broken commitment is an invitation to isolated attitudes. The result is a vicious circle of Distrust and paralysis. We need to rescue the conviction in collective mobilization, ”he warned.

The president highlighted the position of the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “We are committed to reducing emissions from all greenhouse gases between 59% and 67%, [até 2035, em comparação com o que o país emitiu em 2005] covering all sectors of the economy. Our goal of zeroing deforestation by 2030 will contribute to achieve this goal, ”he said.
