A warning situation implies the “prohibition of activities with the coastal waterfront and in riverside areas” and “the restriction of circulation with the coastal edge, except for residents and essential services,” explains the Regional Government.
The Azores will declare a warning situation, between 18:00 this Thursday and 18:00 on Friday, in the central and western groups, prohibiting certain activities due to the passage of the Gabrielle Tropical Cyclone, the Regional Government announced.
“This warning situation is in force between 18:00 today and 18:00 tomorrow [sexta-feira]”, said the Regional Secretary of Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, at the headquarters of Civil Protection, in Angra do Heroísmo.
According to the ruler, the warning situation implies the “prohibition of activities with the coastal edge and in riverside areas” and “the restriction of circulation with the coastal edge, except for essential residents and services”.
“Tourist or playful activities will also be prohibited, namely pedestrian tracks”, as well as “sports, recreational, cultural or religious activities in open spaces, located in areas exposed to risk.”
The Gabrielle Tropical Cyclone is expected to pass through the Azores as category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale (1 to 5 scale, where 5 is the most severe category), causing an aggravation of the time state from the end of the day.
The Portuguese Institute of Sea and the atmosphere has placed the islands of the central and western groups in red notice, due to predictions of precipitation, wind and maritime agitation.
