Ecuador is fighting violence in prisons that are the venue of the bloody rebellion of gangs. The army is to take control, after the state of the internal conflict was declared by the President.

At least ten victims have claimed a collision between the opponents of drug gangs in the second rebellion in Ecuadorian prisons in the last days. This was stated on Thursday by local police, TASR reports according to AFP.

Blood struggles broke out in a prison in the coastal town of Esmeraldas near the Colombian border. The police said she had found ten dead prisoners in two cells. At least two dead heads had at least two dead heads in shots shared on social networks and verified AFP.

On Monday, 13 killed prisoners and one supervisor were reported in the south of Machala in the south of the country near the border with Peru. Another 14 people suffered injuries and several prisoners fled. Local prisons are crowded and strongly organized criminal groups. Since 2021, violence in prisons has required lives of approximately 500 prisoners.

A country with approximately 17 million inhabitants is located between the two largest exporters of cocaine – Colombia and Peru. Through the once one of the safest countries in South America, about 70 percent of the world’s supplies of this drug are currently smuggled. This has increased violence and crime, as the rival local gangs with ties to Mexican and Colombian cartels are fighting for control of business routes. The largest massacre in prisons took place in 2021, when more than 100 prisoners died in a prison in the port city of Guayaquil.

Last year, Los Choneros gang members took the hostage of dozens of prison guards to escape their boss Jose Adolf Macias, known as “Fito”, while their allies from the outside of the prison detonated the bombs and held live broadcast as a hostage of a television moderator. Fita caught again and imprisoned in June this year.

President Daniel Noboa declared “the state of the internal armed conflict” and ordered that the army temporarily take control of the prisons.
