Countries on the eastern border of the European Union consider building a so -called “wall against drone” to protect against Russian penetrations into their airspace for urgent need, He announced on Friday after the Video Conference by the European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius. TASR reports this according to AFP reports and The Guardian.
“We resist the clear challenges. Russia is testing the EU and NATO, and our reaction must be firm, uniform and immediate,” Kubilius said, saying that new initiatives should prevent the provocations of the Kremlin, which he described as very dangerous. In his view, it is necessary to provide more advanced drone detection systems that are currently missing in the Union.
Discussions on the anti -ron protection on the Eastern Wing of the EU intensified after recent Poland, Romania and Lithuania’s airspace disturbances by Russian drones and after observations of unmanned aircraft over Denmark. Friday’s meeting was attended by representatives of Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and finally Hungary. Kaja Kallasová and NATO representative, head of the Union diplomacy, was also present.
Kubilius expressed the expectation that EU leaders would provide a political impulse for progress in this initiative during the October summit of the European Council in Brussels to continue to prepare the “detailed conceptual and technical plan”. The topic will probably talk about the topic of the twenty -time next week at an informal meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.
At a press conference, he also added that the ministers agreed to delegate further negotiations at the designated negotiators and that the next meeting will soon take place. According to him, some experts suggest that the “wall against drone” project could be completed within a year, but Kubilius admitted that this time estimate is not “certain”.
Together with the Finnish Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen, they stressed that communication with the Ukrainians is important in preparing the project. They are key and have the best knowledge in Europe about what works and what doesn’t, Häkkänen added.
According to diplomatic sources of the Politico portal, the head of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen could propose the possibilities of financing the anti -ron defense at the beginning of next month.
