At least 19 people died of false alcohol poisoning in September in the Leningrad region in the west of the European part of Russia, They informed local authorities on Friday, TASR writes, referring to AFP report.
Regional authorities said these deaths were recorded in the Slancy district, and in eight cases, fatal methanol poisoning has already been laboratory. In the meantime, investigators detained a man and a woman who is suspected of selling fake alcohol. The case is dealt with by the relevant prosecutor’s office.
AFP added that this week in the Samar region, two people were sentenced to nearly ten years in prison for the production and sale of a falsified apple cider, which in 2023 after ingestion caused death to 50 people. In 2016, more than 60 people died in the Siberian city of Irkutsk and its surroundings who drank a bath concentrate with hawthorn extract and methanol instead of declared alcohol.
After these incidents Russia tightened legislation, no Cheap domestic alcohol and its compensation remain easily accessible especially in remote areas with a low standard of living and high prices of vodka.
