Association of victims of sexual abuse in the church in protest in the Assembly of the Republic

The protest happens a day after the zip code has announced that it has validated 77 of the 84 financial compensation requests received and that the Compensation Fixing Committee will go into operation later this month of September.

A Which gathers victims of sexual abuse in the Church, protests this Saturday with the Assembly of the Republic, in Lisbon, against the “lack of transparency” of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP) and the state inaction.

The protest happens a day after the zip code has announced that it has validated 77 of the 84 financial compensation requests received and that the Compensation Fixing Committee will go into operation later this month of September. The association’s spokesman says victims who have asked for financial reward to know neither when nor how much the money will receive.

“The Assembly of the Republic has a very important obligation, in view of all this problem of legislating to end the prescription of sexual crimes against children. Trauma does not prescribe. The accusation we make in this protest is against the Portuguese episcopal conference, parents seem to be a secret society, because it continues to cover and conceal almost everything,” he told SIC News António Grosso.

“Victims do not have the minimum and basic right to know the opinion that is written on them and will determine the value of compensation. This is an attack on our dignity.”, He added

Speaking to the Lusa Agency, the Heart Silenced Association also criticizes the process of interviews with the victims, who in recent months have remembered the sexual abuse of which they were targeted, considering that this was “A very hard revitimization process” and considers it exists “lack of transparency” by the zip code.

The protest will take place at the head of the Assembly of the Republic as a criticism of the “inert attitude” of the Portuguese State, “because I did not do anything, or promoted nothing special about this theme”.
