The market share occupied by Brazilian films in the country’s movie theaters increased by 2025. Preliminary data released on Thursday (25) by the National Film Agency (Ancine) show that one in ten Brazilians who went to the cinema in 2025, until August, watched a national film.
According to Ancine, market share rose from 1.4% of the public, in the first eight months of 2023, to 11.2% in 2025. Similar growth occurred in the number of sessions occupied by Brazilian films: in the first eight months, it went from 4% in 2023 to 14.1% in 2025.
In a statement, Ancine considers that the numbers reveal “effectiveness” of the obligation of the displaying companies, owners of movie theaters, to include in their programming, the so -called “screen quota”.
The screen quota for 2026 is currently under discussion at Ancine. On Thursday, the agency held a hearing with producers, distributors and film exhibitors to deal with the parameters that will be valid next year.
Postpandery recovery
Data also confirms the recovery of the number of movie screenings in Brazil after the damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Until August 31 this year, 3,534 rooms were in operation-over the year 2019 (3,507), the last before the Covid-19 pandemic, which occurred between 2020 and 2022.
The discharge, pointed out in the market panorama document, confirms resumption of previous years. In 2024, 3,510 was the number of display rooms in use. Despite the number of exhibition rooms, it has not yet been checked in number of sessions, in number of films released even in public.
Until August 31, 2025 (8 months), the total public of theaters in the country was 81.9 million people, a contingent approaching 12 months of 2024 (88.1 million people), but is 36.6% lower than before pandemic (129.1 million in 2019). The number of films released this year (349) is still far from the number of films released last year (456) and 2019 (452).
The number of sessions per year before the pandemic is also insumed. There were 2.94 million sessions in the first eight months of 2019 and 2.91 million in 2025.
