The debate on the creation of a Palestinian state turned hard to the international scene. In recent months, historical powers such as the United Kingdom and France have announced formal recognition of Palestine, joining a growing list of countries that support the cause.

Canada and Australia also followed the same path, expanding the movement that already has nations from Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Today, according to UN data, 151 of 193 member countries already recognize Palestine as an independent state. This represents more than three quarters of the international community.

Still, the United States veto on the Security Council remains the main obstacle for Palestine to gain full seat in the organization.

Israel increasingly isolated: see which countries officially recognize the Palestinian state

The definition of a state does not depend on unanimous approval. According to the 1933 Montevideo Convention, it is sufficient to comply with basic criteria: defined territory, permanent population, representative government and ability to maintain external relationships.

Although it does not fully control its borders, because of the Israeli occupation, Palestine already meets these requirements.

Therefore, many countries began to treat the territory as a sovereign state, even without the UN final seal.

Examples such as Kosovo and Western Sahara reinforce this point: both have broad recognition, but they continue to the United Nations for political reasons.

Israel reacts with hard criticism

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly criticized the decision of countries that recognized Palestine. During a speech at the UN General Assembly, he classified the measure as “anti -Semitic” and said that these nations “will be ashamed in the future.”

He also made a controversial comparison: “Delivering a state to the Palestinians to a mile from Jerusalem after 7 October is like delivering a state to a mile from New York after 11 September,” he said, in reference to Hamas’s terrorist attack against Israel in 2023.

VoZ Palestina Na Onu

In the same assembly, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made a virtual pronouncement after entering the US government. He pointed out that there will be no lasting peace until Palestine is recognized as a state:

“Justice will only be done when there is a state of Palestine. We want to make it clear that Hamas does not represent our people and will have no space in an eventual government.”

The speech reinforced the search for legitimacy and made evident the attempt of Palestinian leadership to separate the national cause from the performance of extremist groups.

Increasingly isolated United States

Among the five permanent members of the Security Council, four have already recognized Palestine: Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom.

Only the United States maintain firm opposition, which isolates not only Israel, but also Washington on the geopolitical board.

Experts evaluate that this scenario strengthens Palestinian diplomacy, gives a new breath to the cause and increases the pressure for peace negotiations.

At the same time, Israel places a growing challenge: dealing with an international community that mostly no longer question the legitimacy of Palestine as a state.
