In the north of the country, there is a rail that combines nature in pure state, mountain landscapes and a final destination that many consider mandatory. Those who venture through this route find lagoons, merchandous and an impressive formation that is considered the largest waterfall in Portugal.
Located in Serra do Alvão, this water fall attracts visitors throughout the year, seeking to combine the exercise of the walk with the contemplation of unique scenarios. The route, although demanding, offers rewards every step.
A track in Mondim de Basto
The route starts from the Ermelo village, in the municipality of Mondim de Basto, and surrounds the falls of the Olo River. Along the way, visitors find marks of local rurality, typical houses and a preserved environment.
With about 12.5 kilometers long and classified as moderate to difficult difficulty, the rail is circular and properly signaled, allowing you to be followed even by those who are not specialist in mountain walks.
Demanding climbs and striking landscapes
Early on, the walkers are faced with a marked climb of 400 meters in just three kilometers. Despite the necessary physical exertion, the view from the Bulhão Lomba viewframe pays off, revealing parales such as the yellow fragus and the framing of the famous waterfalls.
With each stop, the Sierra do Alvão landscape shows new perspectives, inviting rest and contemplation. The silence of the mountain, broken only by the sound of the water, is an integral part of the experience.
Lagoons and the sound of the water
One of the highlights of the walk is the arrival of the viewpoint from the top of the big head, from where the sound of the largest waterfall in Portugal can be listened to. Nearby, the pocas from above offer the possibility of diving in natural lagoons of crystal clear water.
The rail follows next to the Olo River, with shadow zones and ideal places for picnics. The passage through Varzigueto village adds a cultural touch to the route.
The return to Emelo
Prior to returning to the starting point, the walkers find the Ermelo’s viewpoint, where the cliffs are revealed and the grandeur of water falls about 200 meters high. This is the point that consecrates the fame of the “largest cascade of country”, that of Ermelo’s Fisgas, as stated by the online newspaper.
On the way to the village, be careful with the unevenness and the loose stones. For the most resistant, a deviation also allows you to know other natural lagoons, known as bass pocas.
Practical information
The rail can be performed at any time of the year, but the days of mild climate are the most recommended. In the highest heat, it is essential to bring water, hat and sunscreen. The indispensable items are also comfortable footwear, light foods and a bag to collect the trash in order to preserve nature. The starting point is the Parish Church of Ermelo, where there are places to park.
Combining physical effort, contact with the nature and the possibility of discovering the largest waterfall in Portugal, this route in Mondim de Basto is today one of the most sought after by those who want an active escape in the national territory.
