Peruvian young people clashed with the shock troop while gathering for another round of protests against President Dina Boluarte Nest Saturday (27). Last week, demonstrations in the capital had already ended in clashes with the police, leaving more than a dozen police, protesters and injured journalists.

The shock troop used tear gas while driving a group of protesters off a street in Lima.

The protests began on September 20, after renovations in the country’s pension system that required all Peruvians over 18 to join a pension provider, but also represent Congress.

Discontent, said one expert, has been fed by economic insecurity and increased crime. Young people also criticize the security forces to be held responsible for the death of dozens of protesters when Boluarte took power in late 2022 after former President Pedro Castillo was dismissed from office and arrested.

The July report of the Peruvian Institute of Studies shows that the Boluarte approval rate is 2.5%, and Congress, 3%.
