Japanese automaker Toyota workers approved a layoff program designed to protect employment and income after an extreme climate event that partially destroyed one of their factories in the state of São Paulo, according to the workers’ union statement.

Strong rains and winds caused severe damage to the Toyota factory in Porto Feliz, which produces engines, leading the company this week to paralyze production on site and at its Sorocaba unit, where it assembles vehicles such as Yaris, Corolla and Corolla Cross.

This Sunday, Toyota said it continues to evaluate the damage at the Porto Feliz unit, adding that the resumption of work at the motor factory should “take months”.

“Considering this situation, the company is looking for engine supply alternatives from Toyota units in other countries, with the objective of resuming vehicle production in Sorocaba (SP) and Indaiatuba (SP) plants.”

According to the Sorocaba and Region Metalworkers Union, more than 96% of voters approved Layoff’s proposal.

One of the key points traded by the workers and the company was the guarantee that all employees with gross salary of up to R $ 10,000 per month would receive full payment during the layoff period.

Of the 4,492 workers able to vote on Sunday, 3,709 participated in the vote, the union said.

The union reported that the Layoff period will begin on October 21, after the 20 -day emergency vacation starting on October 1st.

The layoff program may be extended monthly for up to 150 days, the union added.
