A riot in an electoral rally in southern India on Saturday, 27, left at least 31 dead, and other injuries, according to information from local authorities.
The rally was from the popular Indian actor and politician Vijay, in the state of Tamil Nadu. A state parliamentarian, V. Senthil Balaji, told reporters that “so far 31 people have died in the stampede.” He also added that nearly 60 people were injured and were taken to a hospital.
India Prime Minister Narendra Modi lamented what happened in a publication on a social network. “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply sad. My thoughts are with families who have lost their loved ones. I wish them strength in this difficult time. I pray for the rapid recovery of all wounded,” he said.
