The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, criticized the US decision to suspend visas from Brazilian authorities, classifying the measure as “unpleasant and unjust.” In an interview with CNN on Friday (26), Barroso highlighted his expectation that the application of magnitsky law will be reversed soon.
The Magnitsky Law, which allows sanctions against individuals accused of human rights violations and corruption, has been used by the US to restrict visas and freeze goods from foreign authorities. The recent suspension of the visas of members of the Brazilian judiciary generated immediate reaction from the president of the Supreme Court, who defended respect for national institutions.
Barroso also stated that he classifies as “unjust” the United States offensive against members of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in an interview with CNN on Friday (26). Despite the criticism, Barroso has shown optimism in claiming that he expects an improvement in the Brazilian political scenario after the conclusion of the judgment of all the nuclei of the criminal plot -related criminal action.

Barroso, who is about to pass the STF presidency to Minister Edson Fachin, who takes office next Monday (29), also commented on the current moment of the political debate. He criticized the “timing” of the discussion about amnesty, noting that the theme is being treated prematurely. However, it argued that the National Congress has the constitutional assignment to discuss the reduction of penalties.
