Franz Grundheber was on the stage of the Vienna State Opera over 275 times. The German bass baritone, a chamber singer of the Haus am Ring since 1998, has now died at the age of 88 shortly after his birthday, as several media report. As important as Vienna was for the singer, his parent company remained the Hamburg State Opera, to which Rolf Liebermann hired him in 1966. He interpreted over 150 games here, where the chamber singer title was awarded to him in 1988.
