Structure in the province of Guizhou is 625 meters from the Beipan River; Crossing that took two hours is now done in 2 minutes

The highest bridge in the world was inaugurated on Sunday (28.Set.2025) in the province of Guizhou, in southwest China. The crossing that took two hours is now made in 2 minutes, according to the state news agency.

The Huajiang Great Canyon Bridge, on the mountainous field of Guizhou, is almost 9 times higher than the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco in the United States.

With a main 1,420 meter span, the project became the shrewd steel beam bridge with the largest span in the world on mountainous ground, according to Guizhou’s provincial authorities.

Crossing the Great Huajiang Canyon, nicknamed “The Rachado of the Earth”, the structure is the latest addition to the rapidly expanding infrastructure network of the world’s 2nd largest economy.

The old highest bridge in the world, which crosses the Beipan River, is located just over 100 km from the great Huajiang canyon. The previous record holder, inaugurated in 2016, has a free height of 565.4 meters from the bridge board to the surface of the river.

Over the years, Guizhou, one of China’s least developed provinces, has built over 30,000 bridges on its mountainous ground, including 3 of the highest in the world. The province houses nearly half of the 100 highest bridges on the planet.

Here’s the data from the Huajiang Great Canyon Bridge:

  • Structure is 625 meters above the Beipan River;
  • It is 2,890 meters long;
  • It took 3 years to be built;
  • It cost more than 2 billion yuans ($ 1.5 billion).
