Croatia discusses the recognition of the Palestinian State. However, the Prime Minister states that the current conditions for the mutual solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict exist.

It is not a question for Croatia whether it will recognize the Palestinian state, but when it will do so, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovič said on Monday. At the same time, however, he admitted that similar recent steps from other countries did not put more pressure to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Informs TASR according to the report by Hina.

President Zoran Milanovič at the UN in New York last week publicly stated that Croatia should recognize the Palestinian state. However, the Croatian Parliament subsequently rejected the proposal to officially recognize the existence of Palestine. Plenkovič reiterated that the only possible and long-term solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is based on the existence of two states, but in practice, the conditions are currently not created.

The Palestinian state recognizes more than 140 countries of the world, ie more than two thirds of the UN members. In May and June this year, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Norway joined them. In recent weeks, the Palestinian statehood and Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and France have recognized the Palestinian statehood.

On the contrary, Israel and the United States condemned such steps claiming that they only reward the Palestinian militant Hamas movement, whose attack on Israel of 7 October 2023 triggered a war in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Palestinian state would not arise, and announced that Israel would continue to expand the Jewish settlements on the occupied West Bank of Jordan.
