Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece need concrete measures to resolve "water scarcity"

Portugal pointed out as one of the countries that can most undergo climate change

The European Environment Agency considered Monday that concrete policies are needed to solve “sustainable water shortage, which is already a pressing problem” in Portugal, Spain, Greece and Italy.

“The area of [Mar] Mediterranean is the highlight of the consequences of climate change, it is necessary to adapt not only to cities and infrastructures [desses países]but also agriculture, ”said the executive director of the European Environment Agency, Leena Ylä-Mononen, at a press conference in Brussels, capital of Belgium and where the main institutions of the European Union (EU) are located.

The official considered that it is necessary to resolve the scarcity of “sustainable water scarcity, which is already a problem” in most of these countries, asking for concrete decisions for “water resilience”.

Despite the presentation of the report, the European Commission, represented by the commissioner with the environment folder Jessika Roswall, and Vice President Teresa Rivera, did not present proposals to try to solve the problems presented by the report, which calls for more urgent actions.

The community executive merely recognized that there is urgency to try to comply with climate change, but has maintained the proposals that are already being implemented or previously announced.

Portugal, Spain, Greece and Italy can even consume 71% of the total energy in the EU used to cool buildings because of global warming, according to a report released today.

According to a report released today by the European Environment Agency, problems for energy safety vary in Europe, however, in the southern countries there are “increasing” risks of heat, drought and water shortages.

These phenomena will be responsible for changes in energy consumption behaviors, namely the cooling systems of buildings.

“In the future, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain will be able to consume 71% of the total annual energy used to cool residential buildings in the EU,” the European Environment Agency warned.

With regard to decarbonization, the ecological design of the European Union for the coming decades and is the target of increasingly intense debate among the countries of the European political-economic bloc, Portugal is presented as a “good son” of Brussels and an “front example” of this goal.

In 2023, renewable energy provided 73% of the energy consumed in the country, “positioning it as one of the front countries in the energy transition.”

“Portugal has invested immensely in hydroelectric and wind energy since the early 2000s and in recent years has rapidly increased the ability of solar energy through projects of photovoltaic panels and the construction of solar installations on roofs,” the document added.

In 2021, the conclusion of the closure of the centrals that produced energy from coal represented “a decisive moment in reducing emissions” of greenhouse gases.

However, at the European Union level the situation is not good.

The European Environment Agency report recognizes that there has been “significant progress” in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, but the “scenario is not good.”

The EU is late in the objectives to which it is proposed and nature “continues to suffer degradation, over-exploration and loss of biodiversity.”

The warning comes at a time when several sectors, for example, the car, and a wide set of Member States told the European Commission that it is necessary to redo the calendars and to dilate the deadlines to comply with climate ambitions to ensure EU competitiveness.

Industry, widespread, warned Brussels that the rhythm of decarbonization is incompatible with the transformation of the industry, keeping it competitive.
