Pró-European Party of the Moldova on the way to keep the majority in important elections for entry into the EU

With about 93% of the votes calculated, PAS obtained 47% against 27% of the patriotic block, which opposes the narrower ties with Brussels

The European Pro-Union Party, Action and Solidarity (PAS) has consolidated a comfortable advantage over the pro-Russian rival, patriotic bloc, in the parliamentary elections of Moldova, according to preliminary results released on Sunday. With about 93% of the votes calculated, PAS obtained 47% against 27% of the patriotic block, which opposes narrower ties with Brussels.

Although still without absolute majority in Parliament, which has 101 seats, the preliminary result puts the PAS closer to the expected threshold, facilitating the formation of coalitions. Votes of voters abroad, who tend to favor European integration, can still boost PAS beyond 50%.

Maintaining the parliamentary majority is crucial to advancement of the Moldova to the EU, a process that requires years of legislative efforts.

The elections had a high stake, with 52% of voters to travel to the polls. However, electoral scrutiny occurred under strong accusations of Russian interference, with several cybers and even false bomb threats at polling stations abroad.
