Cruzeiro do Sul lost last Saturday (27) one of his greatest references in the area of education. At 90, he died Professor Maria Lima de Souza, affectionately known as Dona Mariquinha. The body is being veiled at the Franciscan sisters’ hall, in the Morro da Gloria neighborhood, where family, friends and alumni pay the last honors.
With a trajectory marked by the love of teaching, Dona Mariquinha dedicated 35 years to education, during which she also performed prominent functions. She was the director of the traditional São José School, which at the time attended exclusively boys, and still performed volunteer work, teaching Portuguese to the Franciscan sisters from countries such as Germany, Philippines and the United States for mission in Cruzeiro do Sul.

The teacher’s legacy is reflected in several generations that went through their classrooms. Many of his alumni have become doctors, politicians and prominent professionals, including former governor Orleir Cameli, who began his school life under his guidance.
In recognition of his contribution, during the government of Orleir Cameli, the Maria Lima de Souza School was built in the Cobal neighborhood. Inaugurated in 1998, the unit has 10 classrooms, inspired by the Dom Henrique Ruth school model, and marked public recognition to the work of the educator, who was able to receive this tribute in life.
Mother of three, Souza Neto, resident in Cruzeiro do Sul; Monica Cristina, in Cuiabá (MT); And Marcelo Souza, in Rio de Janeiro, Dona Mariquinha also leaves five grandchildren and a legacy of dedication, generosity and love for the profession.
