The vice president and minister of industry and commerce, said, on Monday (29) that it is optimistic that the possible meeting between the e Unlock negotiations to reduce the tariff against Brazilian products. He gave an interview to CBN radio. “We are confident that it will have a good conversation between President Lula and President Trump and that this can unlock further so that we go more,” he said.

According to him, the meeting should allow new steps towards more exceptions to the rate and also a 50% rate reduction for those being affected. He also stated that, although there is no information on date or the type of meeting between heads of state, it will be an important step. Alckmin said he was optimistic about the advancement of negotiations, but it is necessary to wait for the next steps. He stated that the private sector was very important and will continue to be for the tariff to be minimized.

“So, the private sector had and will have an important role for us to exclude more sectors of the tariff, which was 10%plus 40%, then that gives the 50%, and reduce this rate, because it has no meaning,” he said. The vice president stated that he had no details of what led Trump to be more open to negotiating with Brazil, but found the change positive. According to him, the logical arguments are on the Brazilian side.

He also said there was no relationship between decisions of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and an import policy, such as the one done by the US. With this, the advance of dialogue will greatly help improve the relationship with Americans. “Import and export tariff is regulatory policy, it has nothing to do with the issue of Supreme Court decision,” he said. Alckmin declared 15 days from now to go to India to negotiate the opening of more markets for Brazilian products.
