The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), said on Monday (29) that he will be a candidate for reelection in 2026, departing rumors about a possible candidacy for the Planalto Palace. The statement was given after a visit to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in house arrest in Brasilia.

“I am a candidate for reelection, as I have said. This is already clear. I came to visit a friend, without any political interest,” said Tarcísio, who reported having found Bolsonaro weakened, with frequent hiccups due to complications resulting from the stabbed in 2018.

The meeting, requested by the governor on September 15 and authorized by STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes, took place in the former president’s condominium in the Botanical Garden and lasted about three hours.

Present at the meeting, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) argued that his father should be the right candidate in 2026, but admitted that the decision will depend on the end of the amnesty project to the condemned by the coup plot.

“Regardless of how things are going forward, me, Tarcisio and the center-right parties we will be together in 2026,” said Flávio, noting that the governor of São Paulo is “a great political asset” for the conservative field.
