Former Chancellor Celso Amorim, special advisor of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) for international affairs, said on Monday (29) that the Brazilian president will not accept any kind of embarrassment in any meeting with US President Donald Trump.
“Lula will never be humbled by Trump. This possibility does not exist, it can take it out of the head,” he said Amorim to Folha de S. Pauloby commenting on the fears of a “diplomatic ambush,” a situation that has already involved other leaders in recent meetings with the Republican.
Itamaraty and the US State Department work reserved to make a meeting possible, possibly in October, in Malaysia, during the Asean summit (Association of Southeast Asia Nations). There are, however, alternatives like Rome or even a meeting in American territory.

Amorim pointed out that despite Trump’s harsh criticism in a UN speech, improvisation revealed personal praise to Lula. “Personal contact is always very important, he can change everything,” he said, remembering that the petista has even had a good relationship with George W. Bush, even amid the tensions of the Iraq war.
According to the advisor, there is interest of the White House to reopen dialogue channels with Brasilia, especially on commercial themes. Lula has already signaled that he will put “everything on the table”, but without giving up national sovereignty.
