Minister Edson Fachin of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) took office on Monday (29) as president of the Court. The minister will have a two -year term and will be in charge of the STF and the National Council of Justice (CNJ) by 2027.
Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who will be the vice president, was also sworn in.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Supreme, in Brasilia, and was attended by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin, House Presidents, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) and Senate, David Alcolumbre (Union- AP), as well as other authorities. About a thousand people were invited.

Fachin was declared a new president of the Court after signing a term of office and swearing to comply with the Constitution during his term. The minister will occupy the chair of Luis Roberto Barroso, who served a two -year term in charge of the court.
“I promise well and faithfully comply with the duties of the position of president of the Federal Supreme Court and the National Council of Justice, in accordance with the Constitution and the Laws of the Republic,” said Fachin.

Profile
Nominated by then -President Dilma Rousseff, Edson Fachin took office in the Supreme Court in June 2015. The minister was born in Rondinha (RS), but made a legal career in Paraná, where he graduated from law from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR).

In the Supreme Court, he was a rapporteur for investigations of Operation Lava Jato, the temporal framework for indigenous land demarcations and the case known as ADPF of the favelas, an action in which several measures were adopted to reduce police lethality during operations against drug trafficking in Rio de Janeiro.
Rapporteur of the criminal plot’s criminal actions, Alexandre de Moraes is a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo (USP). The minister was sworn in in March 2017. He was nominated by then -President Michel Temer to succeed Minister Teori Zavascki, who died in a plane crash that year.
Before reaching the Supreme Court, Moraes held several positions in the government of São Paulo, where he was Secretary of Public Security and Transport. He was also Minister of Justice in the Temer government.
