The Minister of Health, and the governor of,, spoke on Monday (29) on cases of poisoning caused by adulterated alcohol with methanol. Authorities confirmed the creation of a crisis office and highlighted that investigations are underway at state and federal levels.

Padilha explained that the current epidemiological profile differs from recorded in recent years. According to him, before, the cases were linked to homeless people or attempts to self -meal using methanol sold as fuel. Now the episodes involve consumers who have acquired bottled and rolled but tampered drinks.

Governor Tarcisio reported that 22 occurrences have been notified so far, 15 suspicions, seven confirmed and five deaths under investigation – one of them already confirmed as caused by methanol. He announced that establishments identified with sale of adulterated products may be interdicted cautiously.

During a press conference, Tarcisio countered the Federal Police, which investigates possible CCP participation in tampering. “All that happens now is CCP. There is no evidence of involvement of organized crime in this case,” he said. According to him, the surveys point to small groups without connection with each other.

Authorities stressed that complaints can be made by channels 181 and Procon-SP. Experts warn that it is not possible to identify adulterated drinks by the smell, taste or appearance. The recommendation is to avoid suspicious consumption and seek immediate medical attention in the face of symptoms such as intense headache, nausea, cloudy vision or loss of consciousness.
