At least 91 pupils remain under the ruins of the Islamic boarding school in the Indonesian city of Sidoarjo in the east of the island Java almost two days after its collapse, The local authorities reported on Wednesday based on attendance records and reports of the missing families. More than 300 rescuers are working on their rescue, TASR reports according to AP report.
The National Agency for Managing Disasters on Tuesdays late in the evening confirmed that at least 91 people are likely to remain under debris, the estimates have reported estimates until then 38 missing.
According to the agency, at least six children are still alive, but their rescue is complicated by the instability of the building. Rescue teams decided not to use heavy equipment for fear that it could cause further collapse of the building. Stuck pupils under the ruins provide oxygen, water and food.
The school building collapsed on Monday when the pupils participated in prayers. At least three of them died in the incident and another 100 suffered injuries. According to AP, many of the injured wounded head and fractures have. The victims are mostly boys of teenage age. The girls prayed in another part of the building and managed to escape. School pupils are between the ages of 12 and 17, explains the BBC television.
The original prayer room had two floors, but without permission to it were added two more. The police said the foundations of the old building were probably unable to carry new floors and collapsed during concreting, AP adds.
According to the BBC, the affected school belongs to the Pestantren category – a traditional Islamic boarding school in Indonesia. Students live there, study and practice religion under the guidance of a religious teacher. Schools of Pesantren traditionally focus on Islamic studios, the Qurán memorization, the teaching of Arabic and Islamic law. Currently, many of them also offer general education.
