The Armed Forces start on Wednesday (1st) one of the largest military training of the last decade. Named Operation Atlas, the simulation will involve about 10,000 military personnel and will extend until October 11, occupying strategic areas of Amapá, Amazonas, Pará and Roraima.

The exercise aims to test the defensive capacity of the Amazon and the interoperability between army, navy and aeronautics. The region, considered sensitive for the high international interest and the performance of criminal trafficking organizations, will be the scene of land maneuvers, aerial, naval and even cyber.

The operation occurs in a moment of geopolitical instability. Between 2023 and 2024, Brazil reinforced its presence in Roraima after Venezuela threatens Guyana in the dispute over Essiquibo’s territory, rich in natural resources. Currently, the regional environment is still marked by friction, with the climbing tensions between Caracas and Washington.

On the ground, the army will employ more than 40 armored, including the VTE Leopard, as well as 434 vehicles, nine helicopters and 3,600 military personnel. Part of the vehicles was transported from Rio Grande do Sul to Roraima, an equivalent distance to cross Europe, from Lisbon to Moscow.

The Air Force will participate with AMX A-1M and A-29 Super Toucan attack aircraft, while the Navy has moved its largest asset, the Atlantic Multipurmonary Aerodrome.

The 208 -meter long and 20,000 tonne ship came from Rio de Janeiro taking 1,044 military personnel, 700 tons of equipment and 80 vehicles, as well as helicopters, armored and missiles.

War and sovereignty

Brazil bets on this type of operation to maintain the strategic advantage in an extreme climate environment, hostile ground and logistics isolation. “The goal is to reproduce a war scenario as realistic as possible,” says the Ministry of Defense.

In addition to reinforcing sovereignty, Operation Atlas takes place on the eve of COP30 in November in Belém (PA), which will bring together delegations from over 60 countries.

For the military, the proximity of the event expands the international visibility of the exercise and reinforces the message that Brazil is prepared to protect its Amazon.
