Confederation discardes proposal that would transform two vacancies of the preliminary phase into a direct vacancy for the group stage of the continental competition

The (Brazilian Football Confederation) decided to maintain the current distribution system of Brazilian vacancies for, according to information released by this 3rd (30.Set.2025).

The organization ruled out the proposal that would transform two vacancies of the preliminary phase into a direct vacancy for the group stage of the competition.

The president of the CBF, did not include the theme on the agenda of his recent meeting with Alejandro Dominguez, president of Conmebol (South American Football Confederation). The idea had been evaluated internally, but was abandoned before any formal negotiation with the South American organization.

Impact for Brazilian clubs

The maintenance of the current format directly affects Brazil clubs that seek participation in the main continental tournament. If the change had been implemented, it would change the way Brazilian teams access the competition. Decisions on participation formats are defined at CBF headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

The CBF will disclose on Wednesday (1st.out.2025) Changes projected for season 2026. These include the possibility of Serie A clubs starting in the most advanced phases. The final of the competition should be played again after the end of the Brazilian Championship.
