At least five people died after a strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines, the ABS-CBNthe largest broadcaster in the country, on Wednesday, citing the police.
The earthquake, which hit the coast of the city of Cebu on Tuesday afternoon, caused power outages and damaged buildings in the region.
The US Geological Service (USGS) estimated the depth of the earthquake by 10 km and recorded several secondary tremors in the region after the event, being the strongest secondary tremor of magnitude 6.

Another monitoring agency said there was no threat of tsunami after the earthquake.
The city of Cebu, located in central Visayas, in the Philippines, has a population of almost 1 million inhabitants, according to USGS.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ian PO, Villaba police chief in the central province of Leyte, said the earthquake lasted about 10 seconds. The police station building was visibly shaken by the quake, he said.

Police colonel Enrico Figueroa, chief of the city of Cebu, reported that some posts mounted on posts exploded during the earthquake.
AFP also reported that the earthquake has damaged buildings and roads and overthrew electricity from parts of the region, with rescue teams looking for possible victims.
A Reuters could not immediately check the report.

The Philippine Seismology Agency, Phivolcs, warned of secondary tremors and damage caused by the section in the high seas. He also warned that “strong currents and rapid changes in seawater level are expected.”
“The interested public is advised to be on alert for unusual waves,” he said in a statement.
The Philippines are in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common.
