Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on Wednesday that recent drones incidents that disrupted the operation of two Danish airports “are only the beginning” and the situation “will worsen and be more serious”. The head of the Danish government claims that Russia has a hybrid war against Europe and the response of European countries must therefore be more strong. TASR reports this according to The Guardian.
“I hope everyone is aware that a hybrid war is underway,” the Danish Prime Minister said in front of the EU leaders’ informal summit in Copenhagen. “From a European point of view, there is only one country that poses a threat to us, and that is Russia – and therefore we have to answer strongly,” she said.
Strengthening defense is necessary
Frederiksen stressed that Europe needs to be armed, strengthened and innovated more. “At the same time, we must be very, very transparent and honest. In a hybrid war, you cannot defend yourself against all different kinds of activities,” she said.
Europe is currently in the most difficult and dangerous situation since the end of World War II. She stressed that the continent faced threats arising from the “real war” in Ukraine and the new threats arising from the hybrid war.
The threat of drones and cyberterus
“The aim of the hybrid war is to endanger us, divide us, destabilize us. The first day to use drones, the second cyber attacks and the third sabotage,” Frederiksen warned.
European officials will discuss on Wednesday to strengthen their own defense and support for Kiev. In Denmark, which hosts an informal summit, there were several incidents last week, where unknown drones have flown over the airports or military objects. Copenhagen has therefore strengthened security measures and banned overflows of all civilian unmanned aircraft in the country’s airspace this week.
