Flotilha: Portuguese authorities have asked Israel to treat citizens “with dignity” and “without violence”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs ensures that it is following the situation of the Portuguese who were following aboard the flotilha and were arrested by Israel on Wednesday.

In a statement, MNE informs that the consular protection “was always guaranteed”recalling that the monitoring of the mission was done by the Italian fleet, at the request of the Portuguese government.

It also informs that the consular services of the Portugal Embassy in Telavive have been in contact with Israeli authorities for several daysto whom they requested that national citizens were treated “with dignity and without violence” and “respect for their individual human rights”.

“The same services also requested that, as soon as possible, are informed of your state and where you will be detainedto be provided with due diplomatic and consular protection, ”reads the note.

The Portuguese Government also states that the Israeli authorities expressed availability so that, at the first opportunity, a visit to the Portuguese citizens will be allowed.

“Consular services have already managed to contact one of the Portuguese on the high sea reinforcing that we are alert and fully available to provide all the support. ”
