Among the banished are “1069”, “Adolf Hitler” and even famous brands like Nutella
A list of forbidden names in the United States has again attracted attention on social networks after being updated.
Restrictions show how far the creativity of parents and how the law imposes limits to avoid legal problems and constraints on their children.
Among the vetoed names is “1069”, a numerical sequence that became a legal case in 1976, when Michael Herbert Dengler tried to officially change to this designation.
The request was rejected and opened precedent for states like Northern Dakota and Minnesota to prohibit names composed only of numbers.
The rules vary according to each state, but in general, US notaries do not accept names containing numbers, symbols, obscenities or official titles.
The justification is practical: avoid confusion in documents, registrations and judicial systems.
A recent example was that of businessman Elon Musk, who had to change his son’s name “X æ A-12” because of California legislation, which only allows letters from the English alphabet in birth records.
Among the names that appear on the list of prohibitions are:
- Rei
- Queen
- Jesus Christ
- Santa Claus
- Majesty
- Adolf Hitler
- Messiah
- @
- Nutella
- 1069
According to experts, prohibitions aim to protect children’s well-being and avoid ridicule situations.
In countries such as the United Kingdom, similar restrictions also exist, seeing names such as “cyanide” or “Martian.”
In the United States, the rule is that every individual has a readable name, in standard and fit to be registered in official documents. The case of “1069” shows how even an isolated attempt of originality can influence a country’s laws.
