For centuries, people have been reporting on bluish flickering lights that were woven about swamps and bogs, sometimes also in cemeteries. While the folklore connects them with ghosts, demons, elves or fairies who want to mislead the night hikers, experts know better. In the meantime, it is known that rotting plants or animals release a methane -containing gas that can ignite under certain conditions and burn with a cool, blue flame.
