Archaeologists have discovered near the Sea of Galilee a rare treasure of gold coins and jewelry, almost 1400 years old, dating from the Byzantine era.
The treasure contained 97 pure gold coins and dozens of jewelry, including pearl inlaid earrings, semiprecious stones and glass.
The archaeological group discovered the treasure during the research of the old city of Hippos (also known as Susita), located on the slopes of Golan heights.
“It is one of the five largest gold treasures of that period discovered in the region. The presence of jewelry and small currencies makes it even more interesting and more significant. It is the first such treasure discovered in Hippos,” said Michael Eisenberg, archaeologist at the University of Haifa and Co-Coordinator, transmits. Noi.mdwith reference to.
Different emperors are represented on coins, starting with the reign of the Byzantine emperor Iustinian I (518-527) and until the beginning of the reign of Emperor Iracie (610-613, although he reigned until 641). On some coins there were remains of fabric, which indicated that the treasure had once wrapped in the fabric.
Among the coins found are solids – large coins of the Byzantine Empire with a high gold content; seed, with a value equal to half solid; and treated, with a value equal to one third of solid.
“It is a rare discovery, which sheds an important light on the understanding of the political and economic history of that period,” noted the number Danny Sayon, who participated in the excavations.
