The lawyer Veronica Abdalla Sterman took possession as minister do STM (Superior Tribunal Militar) This Tuesday (30).
Sterman is the second woman to assume the position of minister in the highest military court in the country in 217 years. The first was Maria Elizabeth Rocha, sworn in 2007 and current president of the court, elected in December 2024.
“Today I am the second woman to assume this court since its foundation. This data already says a lot and it is necessary to lead us to a reflection,” said the new minister.
Still in the inaugural speech, Sterman stressed that parity will only be full if it is built in partnership between all. “We have a duty to expand opportunities for others to come,” he said. According to the magistrate, this will be a commitment of his position.
At the ceremony were present the President of the Republic, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), and the vice president of the Supreme Court (Supreme Court), Alexandre de Moraes.
After the official inauguration, the guests and the minister will participate in a celebration at the Naval Club, in the northern club sector of Brasilia.
The new minister was sworn in the vacancy intended for law, open with the retirement of Minister José Coêlho Ferreira, in April this year.
A, was approved by the Federal Senate after Sabbath at the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) and vote in plenary, with 51 votes favorable and 16 against.
Veronica Abdalla Sterman holds a law graduate from PUC-SP (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo), with a specialization in Economic Criminal Law from FGV (Getúlio Vargas Foundation).
The minister also has a postgraduate degree in the same area by IBCCRIM (Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences), in partnership with the University of Coimbra, Portugal.
