Measure signed with the Public Prosecution Service and the Military Police may end up a ban of almost 30 years, but still depends on approval in Alesp
Together with the State Public Prosecution Service, the Public Defender’s Office and the Military Police, signed an agreement on Monday (29.Set.2025) to authorize the sale of beer at the state’s football stadiums.
The proposal, which ends a ban in force since 1996, was discussed at a public hearing at the (Legislative Assembly of São Paulo). To come into force, it still needs the approval of state deputies.
History of the prohibition
The sale of alcoholic beverages was vetoed in São Paulo stadiums after an episode of violence between fans of and in 1995, no.
The 1996 state law was reinforced by 1997 municipal legislation, which will also need to be revoked. In 2003, it expanded the restriction throughout the country, prohibiting access with objects and beverages that could generate violence.
Previous attempts
Flexibility gained strength in the 2014 World Cup, when the sale was released as an exception. Since then, several states have approved their own legislation. Alesp even approved the release in 2019, but the then governor vetoed the project.
In 2020, the (Supreme Federal Court) recognized the constitutionality of state laws on the subject in other states, such as Mato Grosso, Espírito Santo and Paraná.
The text projects consumption limits and prohibition of input with drinks. The sale will only be authorized within the arenas, but the control mechanisms have not yet been disclosed.
