225 -meter -high chimneys from the Sines coal central were demolished

A framework of the Portuguese industrial panorama came to an end today. The two chimneys of the former Central Thermoelectric Central of Sines, in the Setúbal district, were demolished this Thursday, at 15h00, using explosives, at a symbolic moment that marked the definitive closure of an era. The 225 -meter -high towers broke in less than 20 seconds, as part of the total dismantling of the unit, whose conclusion is scheduled for 2028.

According to EDP, the method chosen was the safest and most efficient for structures of this dimension. The operation took place in a controlled manner, within the perimeter of the center, and had a security plan defined in conjunction with Civil Protection, GNR and local authorities, which controlled access and road cuts.

The former central, closed in January 2021, even provided a third of national electricity in the 1990s, but was losing relevance with the advancement of renewable energies.

EDP has said it continues to evaluate new opportunities for the site, focusing on clean energy projects. The government has already allocated 98.9 million euros, through the Fund for the fair transition, to support the region’s economic reconversion and the reintegration of workers affected by the closing.
