The United States are defending Argentina as a “reference” in the western hemisphere and want to avoid another bankrupt state in the region, such as Venezuela, the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday.
The United States has not maintained strategic interests in the western hemisphere in recent decades and now have a chance to support Argentina, Bessent said in an interview with CNBC.
He praised Argentine President Javier Milei for doing a “fantastic work” and said he was sure that the right -wing leader will do well in the next elections.

“Now Argentina is a reference down there. And now there is a chance that many other countries appear – Bolivia, Ecuador, I think Colombia – after the elections. So what you don’t want is these failed economic models,” said Bessent.
Argentina votes on October 26 in the legislative elections of Mandate, in which Milei’s right -wing party intends to gain seats to strengthen its minority position.
“What the US is doing, just to make it clear: we’re giving them a swap line. We’re not putting money in Argentina, okay?” Said Bessent.

Bessent said in an X post on Thursday he is looking forward to meeting with the Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo team in Washington to advance discussions about financial support options.
“@Ustreasury is fully prepared to do whatever is needed, and we will continue to closely monitor the events,” Bessent said in his post.
