Brazilians with national trips grow in 2024

Number of trips remained stable compared to 2023, but total spending of tourists grew by 11.7%; Data are from IBGE

The Brazilians spent R $ 22.8 billion on national trips in 2024, according to data from (National Sample for Continuous Household Sample) Tourism of (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released on Thursday (2.out.2025). Read A (PDF – 12.7 MB).

It represents a high of 11.7% compared to 2023, when the total spending on domestic tourism was R $ 20.4 billion.

The national average of travel spending in 2024 was R $ 1,843. In comparison by region, the Midwest residents were the ones who spent the most money on tourism: R $ 2,182 per trip. Then appear the Southeast (R $ 2,128), the South (R $ 1,787), the North (R $ 1,451) and the Northeast (R $ 1,206).

Despite having presented the smallest average spending on trips, the Northeast was the region in which the tourists spent the most money. When the destination was a northeastern state, the average investment was $ 2,523 per person.

State analysis is presented by IBGE in daily average spending per person. Tourists from Alagoas and the Federal District had the highest averages. Alagoas invested R $ 366 per day on national trips in 2024, while the average expense of Brazilians was R $ 362 per person.

Number of trips is stable

Despite the discharge of home tourism expenses, the total number of trips made by Brazilians in 2024 remained unchanged compared to 2023. 20.6 million were recorded in each of the 2 years.

The data show stagnation after the pandemic, since from 2021 to 2023 there was a rise of 70.2% in the number of travel-resulting the flexibility of circulation restrictions because of COVID-19 and the recovery of the Brazilian economy.

Falls looking for the beach

The number of displacements for coastal destinations recorded a drop from 1.6 pp from 2023 to 2024. And 4 years, the accumulated retreat was 10.9 percentage points. Nevertheless, the search for sun and beach follows as the main reason for the leisure trips of Brazilians. Corresponds to 44.6% of the trips made in 2024.

The category of travel focused on culture and gastronomy was the only one that grew in the historical series of IBGE. By 2020, this was the purpose of 15.5% of the trips. By 2023, the index rose to 21.5%. In 2024, it reached 24.4%.
