Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said on Wednesday that Brazil will “applaud” the plan announced by the White House to end the war in the Gaza Strip. The statement took place during a hearing at the Foreign Relations and National Defense Commission of the House of Representatives.

“Brazil is following and only yesterday in the late afternoon we learned of the plan that was launched and, no doubt, we will applaud it publicly,” said the chancellor.

According to Vieira, the proposal of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, is aligned with what the Brazilian government has been defending since the beginning of the conflict: immediate cease, hostage release, gaza reconstruction, respect for human rights and expansion of humanitarian aid.

The chancellor took the opportunity to remember that in 2023, when Brazil chaired the UN Security Council, he presented a draft resolution with points similar to the American plan. The Brazilian text provided for humanitarian corridors and guarantee of basic supplies to the population of Gaza, as well as condemning terrorism explicitly.

Despite the broad major majority, the resolution was vetoed by the United States – one of the five permanent members with veto power. “We presented resolutions in this sense that were on the occasion vetoed by a member country,” said Vieira.

What provides for Trump’s plan

The plan revealed by the White House last Monday (29) proposes:

• Creation of a temporary international government, the “Peace Council,” which would be headed by Trump and would include other global leaders.
• Permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
• Liberation of hostages that are still under the power of Hamas, alive or dead.
• On the other hand, Israel would release Palestinian prisoners and return the remains of Gaza’s civilians.

Vieira stressed that the convergence between the points defended by Brazil and the new American plan can create conditions for real advancement. “We make votes that she has effects from all over,” he concluded.
