Receiving a ‘heavy’ traffic fine can cost in the family budget, especially when the value exceeds a few hundred euros. But Portuguese law provides for the possibility of payment in installments, provided that specific rules are met. The objective is to allow drivers with financial difficulties to be able to fulfill the obligation without the impact being immediate and total.
HOW THE PAYMENT PAYMENT
According to Ekonomist, a website specializing in economics and finance, the first step in being able to fractionate a fine is to submit a formal request to the president of the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).
The request must be made through its own printed by order, designated “payment request in installments”.
According to the same source, this request may be submitted at any stage of the case, until the case was sent to court. Still, the law establishes clear criteria for the division into installments to be authorized.
What the law says
The road code, in article 175, stipulates that only fines equal to or greater than 200 euros can be paid in installments. In addition, each installment cannot be less than 50 euros and the plan cannot exceed 12 months.
If the driver fails to pay one of the installments, he automatically loses the right to the phased regime and is forced to settle the total amount in debt at once. This detail is pointed out as one of the most critical points by experts in the area, remembers the publication.
How to submit the request
The form model is available on the ANSR portal and must be completed with all personal data and relating to the offense. After analyzing the order, the entity may approve the payment plan, defining the number of installments and the exact deadlines for compliance.
It also states that non -compliance with legal rules can lead to coercive execution, with aggravation of charges and associated costs.
The importance of meeting deadlines
The experts cited by the source advise to submit the immediate request after the fine is notified, avoiding delays that may limit payment negotiation.
In addition, even in installments, fines remain a significant expense, so it is recommended to include this charge in the monthly family budget.
Those who want to verify the situation of their fines and the driving license points can do so in the road offenses portal, through the ANSR website.
