After the interdiction of the Minor Bar, establishments of noble neighborhood of São Paulo maintain stable movement, but consumers reinforce caution and require proof of origin
Customers of bars of the gardens, the prime region of the city of São Paulo, began to require invoice from the beverage as a way to ensure the origin of the products, according to staff of establishments heard this Wednesday (1st.out.2025) by Poder360.
The change in behavior was motivated by cases of methanol contamination illegally mixed in spirits. On Tuesday (30.Set.2025), the Civil Police and the Sanitary Surveillance banned the bar, which is in the neighborhood, suspected of tampering.
This digital newspaper visited 10 gardens bars between the late afternoon and the beginning of the evening of this 4th (1st.out.2025). According to employees, the clientele did not decrease, but began to question the origin of the drinks based on spirits. The demand for invoices has grown.
“The staff asks for proof, but the movement was the same thing”Said waitress Maria Barbosa Fernandes, 20, from Bar Bkin. At the Violeta restaurant, manager Geleis Aguiar Mafra, 42, said the demand for “Caipirinha, Negroni, Aperol and Gin ” It was not affected.

The invoice requirement is a way to ensure that the drink was bought from reliable suppliers. THE Abrasel (Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants) and Abrabe (Brazilian Beverage Association) released recommendations to identify adulterated drinks:
- buy only in Place of trust;
- prices far below the market;
- check the seal and the labels and Demand tax note;
- check official stamps such as the Ministry of Agriculture and IPI in spirits.
At Cuca Legal cafeteria, behind Club Athletico Paulistano, waiter Marco César, 37, said there are more customer questions, but without direct impact on sales. “People are afraid. They have asked [a procedência das bebidas]but did not decrease [a demanda].”
Clubs suspend distillate
The São Paulo, an organization that represents associations and social clubs of the state, recommended this week the temporary suspension of the sale of distilled drinks among its members.
Among those who have accepted the orientation are Esporte Clube Pinheiros, Esporte Clube Syrian, Hebrew, o Club Athletico Paulistano, besides São Paulo Futebol Clube, Palmeiras and Ipê Clube.
Methanol poisoning
On Tuesday (30.Set), Minister of, Ricardo Lewandowski, said he asked the (Federal Police) to investigate the origin and a possible methanol distribution network that caused, in 2 months, the notification of 41 cases of adulterated drink consumption.
In Sao Paulo, at least 6 people had died until this Wednesday (1st.out). The state concentrated the largest number of cases of suspected methanol poisoning: 37. Authorities act to close bars and cellars suspected of marketing adulted drinks.
Methanol is a liquid, flammable and colorless substance, widely used as solvent and in the manufacture of fuels, plastics, paints and medicines. It has great poisoning potential and, when consumed, can lead to death even in small doses. The substance cannot be intended directly for human consumption.

In case of suspected ingestion or prolonged methanol contact, do not induce vomiting and forward the person urgently to the hospital. The sooner the diagnosis and treatment are performed, the lower the risk of death or serious sequelae.
Treatment is done with intravenous (homestepizole) drugs that, like ethanol, can inhibit methanol metabolism, avoiding formic acid formation, causing the most severe sequelae. The patient may undergo gastric wash and hemodialysis.
