Moscow (Reuters)-Russia said on Thursday that there was no cold war with the West because it was now a “burning” conflict, and that the European Union and the NATO military alliance were lying about alleged Moscow sabotage operations to justify major military spending.

The war in Ukraine, the deadliest in Europe since World War II, has caused the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuba missile crisis.

“I would disagree with the Comparison with the Cold War,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters when asked if a new cold war would be forming with a kind of drone-made “iron curtain” in Europe.

“We are already in another form of conflict. There is no cold here for a long time; there is already fire here.”

Less than two months since the US President, he met with the Russian President, in a summit in Alaska, peace seems even farther with the advancement of Russian forces in Ukraine, Russian drones allegedly flying in NATO airspace and now Washington speaking in direct participation in deep attacks against the world’s largest nuclear power.

Zakharova, when asked about the European accusations that Russia had invaded NATO’s airspace, carried out sabotage operations and hacked important facilities, said the unfounded accusations showed that the EU and NATO were preparing “provocations” against Moscow.

“All of their statements indicate – first, that they are preparing a chain of provocations. Second, they need to justify their military budgets,” said Zakharova.

Former US President Joe Biden, the leaders of Western Europe and Ukraine have classified the Ukraine war as an appropriation of imperial-style land and repeatedly promised to defeat the Russian forces.

Russian President Vladimir Putin portrays war as a decisive moment in Moscow’s relations with the West, which, according to him, humiliated Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, expanding NATO and invading what he considers Moscow’s sphere of influence, including Ukraine and Georgia.
