Deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL) intensified on Wednesday (1st) meetings to ensure the approval of the project that expands the income tax exemption. The former mayor and rapporteur of the text has repeated that the intention is to “move as little as possible” in the government’s proposal, preventing the vote in plenary from being dehydrated by amendments or highlights.
According to parliamentarians present in the conversations, Lira received members from União Brasil, PP and PSD between Tuesday night and Wednesday, in an offensive to consolidate support before the text trip to the plenary. The message that circulated in the offices was clear: the rapporteur seeks to shield the project, considered priority by the Planalto, in the face of sectoral pressures for changes in compensation and calibration of the bands.
The movement is also read as a direct response to Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), who has made public criticism of the reform design. Lira’s allies evaluate that, by approving the project solved and without startled, the deputy would reinforce his authority in the political arena and show the ability to deliver a agenda that became a showcase to the Lula administration.
